MICHAEL - 28

Home, thought Michael. His mind wandered back to the moment this morning, before he tied his tie, as he looked out onto the prairie view he loved. That was today? He sighed as he realized he stopped wandering the tunnels and was staring into space. Where’re the kids? Kay would be in school at her college in Wyoming. How long did they fight about that? She could have gone to his alma mater, Duke, with an amazing jump start to a successful career in finance. Instead, she wanted to go to a small liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere. Max used to wander through southwestern towns in Nevada and jumped trains to Mexico, until he recently took this IT job at the university. He must look pretty bad, however, as a young woman came up to him and allowed him to drink from her water bottle. She did not look very good either. Her head was covered with a scarf and her complexion was ruddy, showing how much stress her body was in.

He was staring at her when she said, “You don’t have to stare. I was here for my weekly chemo treatment and I guess I won’t be having that to look forward to. Come to think of it, I could go outside and get radiation. Ha! What’s up with you? You look different.”

Michael turned to look at his suit, torn with splotches of blood pressed into the fabric. He was sure he looked scary too. As the water
